Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is performed when the eye has lost its transparency. The procedure includes the removal of the natural land and replacing it with an artificial lens. Both cataract surgery and the healing process are fast. It may be necessary to use multiple methods. There are different lens solutions according to the level of cataract degree.

What isCataract

Cataract is a condition that occurs when the natural lens of the eye loses its transparency and becomes cloudy. It leads to impaired vision due to brown and yellow discolorations. It usually occurs with advancing age, and sometimes it can be congenital.

A congenital cataract is a rare birth defect in the eye that can cause vision problems. Often, cataracts occur at later ages, which are called senile cataracts. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes. However, one eye is always more affected than the other.

    Causes of Cataract

Chemical changes occur in the proteins that make up the lens of the iris, which gives the eye its color. As a result, molecular weight protein aggregates in the eye. Consequently, hazy and blurred vision begins. These proteins prevent light from entering the eye lens over time and reduce the transparency of the eye. Visual disturbances occur as these proteins interfere with the image falling on the retina.
    What are the

    Symptoms of Cataract

Most cataracts develop slowly and do not disturb your eyesight early on. But over time, the symptoms will begin to appear. The natural lens becomes a little blurry each day, and finally, hazy vision occurs. Cataract colors can lead to paler and more blurred vision. The main symptoms are:

    • Inability to see far or near clearly
    • Deterioration of vision, especially on sunny days
    • Sensitivity to light and intense sunlight
    • Difficulty distinguishing colors from each other and colors look faded
    • Blurred vision
    • Constant feeling of eye tiredness and headaches
    • Frequent changes in eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions
    • Difficulty seeing at night

    Cataract Treatment

A cataract is an eye problem that can only be treated with surgery. The eye is examined by a device called an ophthalmoscope. This device helps the surgeon examine the lens of the eye in detail and reveal the damage.
    Cataract Treatment with Laser

    Femto-Phaco

This method is the most advanced and latest technology in cataract treatment. The patient’s eye is mildly anaesthetized. The laser makes an opening in the anterior membrane called capsulorhexis. The major advantage of this method is that a laser is used instead of blades to make initial incisions. This state of the art technique aims to achieve further precision in lens positioning without errors.

    Stitched Cataract Surgery

    Extracapsular Cataract Extraction

This outdated method has not been preferred lately. In this method, the surgeons wait for the cataract to progress and mature. After it reaches a certain maturity, an 11 to 12 mm incision is made from the upper side of the cornea. The hardened cataract tissue is removed by squeezing the eye from both sides. Then, an artificial lens is placed inside. The incision is then closed with sutures. Due to the large incision in this method, the anatomical structure of the eye is disrupted, high astigmatism occurs, and the healing process is prolonged.
    No-Stitch Cataract Surgery

    Phacoemulsification

It is one of the most standard methods used in cataract surgeries. Surgeons made a small incision of 1.8-2.2 mm, and the lens capsule opened roundly. The cataract is disintegrated in the lens with the help of ultrasonic sound waves, and it is removed by using a vacuum method. When the inside of the capsule is cleaned, an artificial intraocular lens is placed inside the capsule. Since the incisions are small, no stitches are needed. The recovery period is short. The risk of astigmatism or infection is almost non-existent. The lenses used in this method are compatible with body temperature, take shape by opening with body heat and are foldable.

    Healing Process

    Cataract-Surgery-Recovery-Process

The healing process takes a long time in the old methods, whereas the eye heals in a few days with the latest treatment methods. However, there may be a slight blurring of vision at first.

Colors may appear brighter following the surgery. It is normal since you are looking through a new lens.

Mild discomfort and itching may occur a few days after treatment. However, this is a temporary situation. It is important not to scratch your eyes.

Cover the eye with a bandage for a few days following the treatment. You will also use drops and drugs to prevent infection. Use them regularly and go to regular surgeon’s checks.

These problems usually disappear in a few days, but the full recovery can take an average of 2 months.

You may use the glasses within one to three months following treatment. If there is a cataract in both eyes, the second operation can be performed once the first eye has healed.

The use of sunglasses and a hat may be beneficial to prevent the recurrence of cataracts. Avoiding contact with water for the first two weeks is beneficial.

    What causes cataracts?

The most determining factor is the advancement of age. In addition, factors such as diabetes, various physical traumas to the eye, eye pressure, and long-term cortisone treatment and radiation exposure trigger cataract. Other than these factors, congenital cataracts may occur in infants and children. If the mother has rubella during pregnancy, it can cause congenital cataracts in the child.

What are the complaints caused by cataracts?

Cataracts can cause complaints such as decreased vision, sensitivity to light, double vision or difficulty in reading, fading or yellowing of colors, and deterioration in night vision.

Is there any other treatment for cataracts other than surgery?

There is no treatment for cataracts other than surgery. A cataract is not a disease that can be treated with medication or glasses. If you have no other eye problems affecting your vision then you can regain vision with cataract surgery.

How long does the phaco method surgery take?

Cataract surgery takes a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes with this method.

Is the phaco method performed under general anesthesia?

Phaco method involves three different anesthesia methods: general, local and drip. These methods are chosen in line with the patient’s needs.

Can I change the lenses later?

Lenses attached to the eye are placed with great precision, intended for lifelong use, and are not easily changed unless it poses a critical problem.
