How is
Laser Eye Surgery Performed?
First, the degree of visual impairment is determined. Then, the cornea layer is reshaped with excimer laser beams, allowing the eye to see correctly and focus clearly. There are carbon bonds in the cornea of the eye that hold the tissue in the cornea together. Excimer laser beams break these carbon bonds and destroy them by evaporation. It gives very successful results all over the world.
Laser Eye Surgery Methods
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
The thin epithelium tissue on the cornea is cleaned with a scraper called a spatula. Once an area of nine mm is made epithelial-free, the excimer laser is applied. The epithelial tissue is scraped from the eye, and the eye starts to renew over time. Patients may feel itching in the eyes for up to a week following the procedure. It can take up to six weeks to see clearly.
T-PRK (Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy)
It is a device-specific feature called the Schwind Amaris Excimer Laser. Laser beams are applied directly to the cornea without cleaning the epithelial tissue. Compared to the PRK method, patients feel less stinging, and the healing and vision restoration is faster.
Lasik (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis)
It is a surgical method developed to correct the cornea in more painless and better quality. This method has four main features.
- Since it is a painless method, the discomfort disappears after two days.
- It can be applied even at high degrees up to 10 in myopia.
- The patients will regain their ideal vision within five days.
- After the procedure, clouding will not repeat.
The LASIK method consists of 2 stages corneal flap creation and excimer laser application.
- The surgeon cuts a thin and circular layer before the laser. Then this layer is folded back so that the center of the cornea remains open. This layer is called the corneal flap. Surgeons use special blades called microkeratomes.
- Once the corneal flap is removed, the laser is applied to the bed of the cornea. Then, the corneal flap, which was folded backwards in the first stage, is returned to the normal position and restored. The Lasik method is a painless and short procedure. The type of anesthesia applied for this method is drip anesthesia. There are no incisions or stitches. Patients can resume their daily lives within 15 minutes following the procedure. There may be complaints such as itching or discomfort from light, but these are so mild that they do not affect daily life.
Femto-Lasik (iLasik)
This method allows the surgeons to perform the corneal incision with a laser. In this way, surgeons can achieve precise flap incisions. In addition, creating a flap with a Femto-laser is more comfortable due to the less pressure on the cornea.
Wavefront
Some people have astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia with an optical aberration. Aberration; is a defect in which optical irregularities occur in the eye in connection with the islets in the corneal layer. Aberration can cause problems such as impaired night vision and decreased visual acuity. In this method called the eagle eye, the irregularities in the corneal layer are determined with a sensitive topography and are corrected together with myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. As a result of this process, the patient has better and sharper vision.
SMILE
- SMILE produces a tiny, lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea by means of a femtosecond laser.
- After that, this lenticule is taken out on the surface of the cornea by a somewhat tiny incision.
- Removal of the lenticule changes the cornea’s form, therefore correcting the refractive defect and enhancing vision.
Important benefits include:
- SMILE’s much smaller incision than LASIK lowers the risk of problems by means of minimally invasive nature.
- Smaller incision causes frequently less disturbance of corneal nerves, which lowers the incidence of dry eye complaints.
- Unlike LASIK, SMILE does not result in a corneal flap, therefore removing the risk of flap-related problems.
- SMILE mostly fixes my astigmatism and myopia. For those with hyperopia—farsightedness—it might not be appropriate.
Laser Eye Surgery Treatment Process
The surgeons take examinations before starting the treatment. This phase is important to secure the success of the treatment. The Excimer laser treatment can be applied to patients who are not at risk.
Surgeons can take 3D views by using topography of the cornea. This will allow them to specify the irregularities in the corneal layer from different angles. All these processes are performed without contacting the eye.
Excimer laser treatment uses anaesthetizing drops instead of narcosis. Excimer laser and flap lifting procedures are procedures that can be performed in 1-2 minutes. The whole procedure only takes about five minutes in total. Since excimer lasers follow the eyes, it is necessary to keep the eye steady during the procedure.
After the procedure, the eyes are not covered with any bandages. You can go home with peace of mind. However, it is useful to rest for a few hours at home. Do not rub or scratch your eyes during this time.
Whether the applied procedure is LASIK or Femto-LASIK methods, you can continue your daily life the next day. Please wear sunglasses for the first few days to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays. It is normal to have complaints such as itching or stinging in the eyes for the first few days.
Is laser eye surgery painful?
Laser eye surgery is not a painful procedure. You may feel slight pressure on the eyes, but this complaint disappears after the procedure.
Is laser eye surgery treatment permanent?
The excimer laser is a process applied to the cornea layer. Since the cornea layer has a stable structure, the operations performed on the cornea with laser treatment are permanent. Although rare, permanence depends on the elasticity of the cornea and its response.
Is there an age limit for laser eye surgery?
Patients under the age of 18 are not eligible for laser eye surgery. Anyone over the age of 18 can safely get this treatment. However, with the advancing age, alternative treatment methods other than laser may need to be applied. This needs to be advised by your doctor.
Are there risks to laser eye surgery?
Safe technology is used in excimer laser treatment. For this reason, it is safe to say that it does not impose any risk.
Can cataracts be treated after laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery does not pose any obstacle to cataract surgery in the future.
